What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document allowing someone you choose to make decisions for you or act on your behalf if you’re no longer able to. This could be a temporary solution whilst you’re in hospital, for instance, or a long-term solution should you be diagnosed with dementia. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney; Health & Welfare and Property & Financial Affairs. You can choose either one or both types for your Lasting Power of Attorney.
Health & Welfare
A Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney can make decisions regarding medical care, moving into a care home and/or refusing life-sustaining treatment. These decisions can only be made once you lose mental capacity.
Property & Financial Affairs
A Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney makes decisions regarding money and property. This includes paying bills, collecting benefits or selling your home. You can appoint more than one Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorneys at any time.
